The Sisters of Perpetual Resistance

The Sisters Of Perpetual Resistance are an elusive network of militant feminist art activists drawing on the disruptive aesthetic and techniques of Pussy Riot, Slut Walk and the women’s suffrage movement of the early 20th century to further their aims. They have renounced a full manifesto in favour of celebrating all women, by any means considered appropriate and are committed to the practice of joyous dissent and peaceful resistance.

In 2010 the Sisters commissioned Miss Pokeno to create work and furnishings for a south London HQ, the only brief being “to glorify that which is deemed too ugly for words”. The work for HQ was completed and exhibited in London in 2013.

In 2014 the Sisters returned from the underground for the Feminist Fiesta 001, a gathering together of women artists and activists for a day of showing and selling work, performances and riotous fun.

In the summer of 2015 Miss Pokeno invited five emerging artists to the Sisters HQ, provided space and resources and gave them each ten days to create an ‘Instrument of Nuisance’.

The exhibition of this work opened the Art of Nuisance in October 2015, beginning a two week series of workshops and events celebrating women, art and activism; creating spaces where dissenting feminists and their friends could play together and trade ideas.

The Sisters’ work is fluid and will continue to evolve.
